Tributes to Robley Evans
Robley Evans 1930-2010 Teacher, Coach and Administrator at SJP for 35 years
Rob worked at St. John's Prep for 35 years and was truly an inspiration to the teachers and students who had the privilege of working with and being taught by him. He was a great listener and had genuine concern and interest in other people and what they were doing. Rob was always there for you. He was a great leader of the school as the principal. He had the ability to make hard decisions that were in the best interest of the school. He loved St. John's athletics and celebrated wins and anguished over losses as much as the coaches did. He truly bled Johnnie red. Robley was a good friend and will be missed. ~ Mike Percuoco, SJP Science/Chemistry Instructor
I was very saddened to learn of Mr. Evan's death even though I knew of his situation of failing health. I had written to him this past summer and received a nice response from his wife. He was one of the finest men I've ever known. I will send a memorial donation to SJP. Thank you for keeping us informed. I had written to Mr. Evans this summer and took the opportunity to let him know what he meant to me. Rita read the letter to him and responded for both of them. Following is a part of my letter and speaks to what I thought of the man:
Far too many years have passed by without me being in touch with someone who was so instrumental in my life. I apologize for that. Up until your retirement from SJP I was able to follow you and all the wonderful things you did for St. John's through the Prep news. You were certainly the most instrumental lay person of your time for the school and perhaps the most instrumental of all time. You were a wonderful role model for me. Long before I ever got to Prep School I held you in high esteem because you were the football coach for my brothers and they always spoke highly of the coach that you were. I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to find out for myself what they were talking about. What I remember is that you knew your stuff, but more importantly what I learned from you was that football was just a game. Something to play to have fun and to learn life lessons from. How to win, how to lose and to never take either one too seriously. I remember my senior year about the time the season ended being called up to your office. A couple of college scouts had contacted me through you and I just knew we were going to sit and talk future football. Football never came up in our conversation. The purpose of my visit was for you to inform me that Fr. Meinholph wasn't happy with my work in Spanish class so he called on you to help us get this thing working. That was a very important life lesson for me and as I looked back years later it was one of those guiding moments in life that helped form me as the man I was to become. You were a good teacher, a good guidance counselor, a good coach and a very good man. I got to watch you and Pete Froehle, Elmer Schwankel and others lead by example as good Catholics. -Bob Froehle '65 (Nome, AK)
Thank you for sending this Mary. Mr. Evans was one of my favorite people at SJP and one of the best disciplinarians. Much of what I do to discipline my children and students today I learned from his firm but friendly example. -Judy Doty '81 (Savage, MN)
It was the Fall of '62 (gosh, it sounds poetic....), & JFK was the President of the United States of America. And here comes this kid from Panama to study at St. John's Prep. Days later... this kid meets this guy, who when he sees this kid having difficulty kicking this "odd-shaped" ball, he looks patiently... & this kid (from REALLY Down South) is sort of puzzled with this funny-looking ball, sort of trying to figure out where in the living lights does one KICK this oblong-shaped "soccer ball". And this guy that was with his "funny-looking" glasses.... with his long khaki raincoat.... sort of helps this kid .... and, like Paul Harvey would say, "You now know, the rest of the story". And, feeling somewhat "left out", this guy eventually puts this kid in as "left end". And lets him get his kicks in the interim. And this man very patiently ... with his unique way of expressing himself.... helped this kid .... & almost 1/2 Century later, this "kid" remembers him very fondly.... as MY first (American) Football Coach. Robley Evans. "The Lord Giveth, & the Lord Taketh. Blessed be the Lord". A couple of years ago, approx. 42 years after Graduation in '66, and thanks to Scott Froehlich, Mike Savard & our priceless Leader (John Hoefs, who reminded me of that last Miner from Chile to exit the evacuation capsule last night, & was greeted by a tearful President of Chile!), undersigned returned to Campus to catch a glimpse of yesteryears. John then took me to the nearby local "watering hole" in Albany... where undersigned had Breakfast with Father Corwin Collins, Coach Elmer Kohorst & MY very first American Football Coach. Afterwards, undersigned had the HONOR of wheeling Coach Evans to his nearby home. Enroute, I would talk to his wife, Ms. Rita, about the Good Ol' Football Days... & at one moment, I can SWEAR that Coach Evans' face turned almost 45 degrees & with a sort-of surprising look, sort of "grinned" on something that I can almost SWEAR that he would hear... & understand... & react. Memories. This "kid" is 3rd generation Irish from Panama, & a good Irish blessing says, "May the road rise to meet you, & the wind be always at your back. And until we meet again, may the Good Lord hold you in the hollow of His hand". Godspeed, Coach! -Martín Daniel Harrington '63, PANAMA Thank you very much for the information on Robley. He truly was a wonderful person! - Bob & Jane Simon, Saint Joseph, MN I am so sorry to hear this. Robley was a fine school administrator and mentor, dedicated to the success of Prep students. He will be missed. Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend his funeral because of the special session in St. Paul. Please extend my and Paula's prayers and condolences. Thank you. - Steve Gottwalt '80 (Saint Cloud, MN)
TRIBUTES TO FR. STANLEY ROCHE, OSB
Fr. Stanley Roche, OSB 1921-2010
Father Stanley taught English at Saint John's Prep from 1947 to 1959 and from 1952 to 1958 he served as its dean.
"I hope that there is some way that Fr Stanley's family can be informed of my sadness at the news of his passing! I was his English student at the Prep School and, having just recently arrived in Collegeville from my native Puerto Rico, can still remember specific things I learned under his tutelage. He was an extremely effective educator who facilitated my transition into the English-speaking culture of America! I remember the day he told us in class that he would be joining the Army as a Chaplain, but didn't realize until now that he had stayed on active duty, retiring in 1981, the very same year that I retired from the US Marine Corps! Who knows--we may have been in Vietnam at the same time! Incredibly, he was in my thoughts just two days ago, and I wondered if he had been in the Abbey when I visited for our 50th reunion and had missed an opportunity to visit with him at that time! May he rest in the peace of Christ!" -Tony Mediavilla ‘52
" I am sorry to see his passing away. Father was the priest that my parents dealt with on financial matters and also my bad grades. Many times I had to go and see father about my poor grades. He was mild, yet firm. " -Richard "Dick" Appelgren '55 " Thank you! What a beautiful summary of his wonderful life. I have fond memories of him as a kind and gentle man at the Prep School, especially when I was in trouble, which was on a regular basis. He led a fruitful and full life serving others! CHEERS! GRAMPA FRED." -Fred Kieser '55
" THANK you for the information about Father Stanley Roche, OSB. My history with Fr. Roche is that I attended SJP for my last 2 years of high school and graduated in May, 1956. He was the dean for the two years that I attended SJP. After I received my undergraduate degree from St. Thomas College in 1960, I entered the Army National Guard and served my active duty in Ft. Jackson, South Carolina. While there, I met with the Chaplan, Fr. Stanley Roche in late 1960. We had some pleasant conversations and remembrances. Always connections from our years at SJP." -Larry O'Leary '56
" I was checking into my latest Army post at Vint Hills Farms Station, Warrenton, VA and one of the base orientation tasks was to introduce myself to the base Chaplain. Imagine my surprise that October of 1965 as I entered the Chaplain's office and there was Fr. Stanley. Having graduated from SJP in 1959 I was unaware that he had joined the Army. It was a most pleasant reunion reminiscing about Minnesota, senior English, my days in Greg Hall. I will always remember how gracious and kind to me he was that day." -John Callahan '59
"Thanks very much for sending me the notification of Fr. Stanley's passing away. Whenever I saw him he was soft-spoken and usually had a gentle smile. Thanks for your consideration." - Bob Lutz '59
"Father Stanley was a wonderful person! He was Dean when I first went to the Prep School - I was only 13 when I was a freshman, and I, too, had a "wild" streak. He and I had a number of one on one counseling sessions, which, later in life, I truly appreciated. I didn't keep up with him, so I wasn't aware of his heroic military service, but, as an Air Force Academy graduate, any chaplain getting the Bronze Star is quite impressive. I remember him fondly, as he and so many others helped form so many of us who attended the Prep School. May God hold him in His arms . . . ." - Joe Rodwell '60
"The Catholic chaplains I met in the Navy were the best chaplains that I ever met there. Fr. Stanley was the real deal. Bob Adams. Please note Joseph Schoolmeester, Class of 1966 was killed in Viet Nam while serving in the U. S. Army. The Prep Life stated only David Bujalski was killed in Viet Nam from the Prep School. I served in the U.S. Navy as a Radarman from 1967 to 1971. I did not go the Viet Nam." - Bob Adams '66

Dennis M. Rice, father of Sarah '09 & Michael '11
Earth receive your honored guest. On January 27, 2011, Dennis Michael Rice departed the bitter cold of Minnesota for a journey to his place in the sun. Mapping out adventurous roads trips was his joyful pastime in recent years, but Dennis seldom left the area; there was always someone here who needed his care. The Visitation will be held at the Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home in Sauk Rapids on Saturday, January 29th, 2011, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. The Memorial Service will follow at 4:00.p.m. at the funeral home. Born in Bemidji, MN, on April 22, 1954, to Jack and Margaret Rice, Dennis was the fourth child and the second son in a family of five. Denny took his place in an industrious clan and the family construction business. His father taught him strength, perseverance, the value of hard work and how to enjoy the rugged outdoors. His mother showed him the wonder in books and nurtured his curiosity about how things work. One lesson this accommodating son didn't need to learn from his parents was selflessness. Born with a big-heart, he'd share his four pieces of candy with three friends. Responsible beyond his years, he'd protect his little sister from schoolyard bullies. Once on a cross-country road trip, Dennis stayed awake while his siblings slept. He talked through the night to keep his father alert. A lanky boy who would grow into a tall man, Dennis was an adventurer who loved heights. To the consternation of his mother, he'd clamber up trees, lasso and scale the chimney, and jump across the span between the house roof and garage roof. More than a decade of bachelorhood changed when Dennis married Danya Hurrle in 1989. The daughter of Elwood and Ellen Hurrle of Southhaven, Danya was sister to twelve. This down-to- earth young woman was instantly accepted and loved by the Rice family. Dennis and Danya settled in a few blocks away from Dennis' parents in Sartell with the intent to help maintain their quality of life. In 1990, daughter Sarah Clarice was born, followed by son Michael Phillip two years later. At the death of his parents, Dennis moved his family into his parents' house on the river continuing the tradition of welcoming family and friends. Dennis' was grateful for everything in his life and mostly for his three greatest blessings, Danya, Michael, and Sarah. To shield them from harm, this tough Irishman held on to life through multiple hospital stays. St. Cloud Hospital staff developed a deep affection for their courteous and considerate patient. If you'd ask Dennis what he did for a living, he would say he was an ironworker. Ask the people at Rice Building Systems, the company he owned with a brother, and they'll tell you he was a brilliant tactician, able to solve complex construction problems and orchestrate solutions. One example was the Bede Hall Addition at St. John's Prep School; Headmaster Father Timothy Backous credits Dennis with an innovative approach to building design. Dennis was admired by clients, subcontractors, and employees because he treated everyone with respect. Many people loved Dennis, but what did Dennis love? Describing Sarah's artistic talent and Michael's quick mind. Loading his highly-insured tackle box in the boat and finding a walleye hole on Leech Lake. Designing a palatial ice fishing house. Trying adventurous watercraft. Customizing wild rice recipes and barbecuing tasty ribs. Teaching himself to play guitar. And his extensive fantasy and science fiction library, Robert Jordan books, and Kindle. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Pat Rice (2006). He is survived and will be sorely missed by wife, Danya, children, Sarah and Michael, sisters Peggy Marrin (Bill) and Dini Rice (David Whissiel,) brother John Rice, and 17 Rice nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by Danya's parents Ellen and Elwood Hurrle, and sisters and brothers Cindy Stelten (Robert), Karen Ranta, Sheila Erickson (Dick), Debbie Mertens (Paul), Linda Mertens (Pat), Nancy Ruprecht (Kevin), Kevin Hurrle, John Hurrle (Stella), Mary Sanders, Mark Hurrle (Lynette), Tom Hurrle (Shelly), Kathy Wills, and 39 nieces and nephews. This last journey is not mapped out like Route 66, but whatever route Dennis takes will be the high road. He'll travel light and unencumbered, free to surf in the wind or catch and release muskies. From above, he'll admire his Maker's handiwork and gently guide those who love him. Obituary, Guest Book, and video tribute available online at: http://www.williamsdingmann.com/ Visit Guest Book

Father Stanley Forrest Roche 0SB Born: 18 November 1921, Professed: 11 July 1942, Ordained: 15 June 1947, Died: 8 May 2010 Forrest Edward Roche was born on November 18, 1921, in Cresco, Iowa, as the second son of ten children of Lawrence and Evelyn (Brokken) Roche. His father was a prosperous farmer who had attended the Minnesota Agricultural College. The farm was lost when the Great Depression hit, and the family encountered bad financial times. Forrest attended rural school in Fremont Township in Winneshiek County, Iowa, from 1927 to 1934. Because of his academic excellence, he was promoted a grade and graduated with his brother Bill. Religious education was provided by his parents and summer catechism school at St. Kyran's mission church. His pastor, Father H. A. Henrichs, encouraged Forrest to become a priest. Forrest attended Harmony High School in Harmony, Minnesota, obtaining his diploma in 1938. During his first year in high school he felt released from parental supervision and "ran with the wild crowd." After that he settled down and excelled in his studies, but college seemed out of reach due to family finances. Father Henrichs told Forrest in August that he had made arrangements for college at St. John's University in 1938 after Abbot Alcuin made a generous offer. No mention was made of priesthood, but Father Henrichs bought Forrest's books and paid his fees and asked Father Owen Tekippe, OSB (1907-1989), to be his guardian. Forrest entered the abbey novitiate in 1941 and received the name of Stanley. After making his first monastic profession on July 11, 1942, Stanley completed his bachelor's degree in philosophy at St. John's in 1944. He continued priesthood studies and was ordained a priest on June 15, 1947. After teaching English in the St. John's Preparatory School during his deacon year, Abbot Alcuin decided that Father Stanley should pursue graduate work in English. He attended summer school at the University of Iowa, the University of Minnesota, and finally at the University of Notre Dame, where he received a master's degree in English in 1952. Father Stanley taught English in the preparatory school from 1947 to 1959 and from 1952 to 1958 he served as its dean. In 1959 a new chapter opened up to Father Stanley when he was given permission to become a chaplain in the United States Army. Of his years spent in the military service, twelve were spent overseas in Korea, Germany, Thailand, Vietnam, and The Netherlands. Ten years were spent stateside at bases in Missouri, New York, Virginia, Georgia, Texas, and Alabama. While stationed in Vietnam, he recalls that he "expected to die there, but the Lord took care of me." Even when asked, he demurred, speaking of those times "as unpleasant experiences that people often try to blot out." The memories would be many judging by the varied medals that Father Stanley received for his military service: the Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Oak-Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with Oak-Leaf Cluster, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal. Father Stanley retired from the military chaplaincy as an Army colonel in 1981. He then served as associate pastor of Holy Rosary parish in Detroit Lakes (1981-1982), pastor of St. Bartholomew's parish in Wayzata (1982-1986), and associate pastor at Detroit Lakes (1986-1988). His last thirteen years of pastoral work were as chaplain of St. Therese Retirement Community in Hopkins. Father Stanley returned to Saint John's Abbey in November of 2001. In his retirement, Father Stanley was given the task of taking care of the stipends for Saint John's Abbey for a few years. He remained a faithful member at monastic prayer and of the Saint John's family. This soft-spoken, sincere, and faithful priest-monk served the community and the world with his disciplined life, humorous stories, and welcoming smile. Father Stanley died on May 8, 2010, in the retirement center at Saint John's Abbey. He is survived by his sisters Evelyn Royal, of Silver Spring, Maryland, Margaret Kneafsey, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Mary Lou Elmore and her husband Wayne, of Bellevue, Nebraska; his brother Lawrence and his wife Mary of LeCenter, Minnesota; his sister-in-law, Phyllis Roche, of Lodi, California; his nieces Nora Anne Whitmore and her husband Sam, of Beltsville, Maryland, and Jo Fenske and her husband Don, of Cresco, Iowa; his dear friend, Pastor Paul Roche and his wife Barbara of Brainerd, Minnesota; and the community at Saint John's Abbey.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Father Stanley on May 13, 2010, in Saint John's Abbey Church with interment in Saint John's Cemetery following the service.
